Lunch Lessons in First Grade

Bento Box Lunch - First time for Hot Rod

Okay, I have to admit that I was a bit worried with the big maniacs heading to school full time this year and having to eat lunch at school. I am not a big proponent of school lunches, especially since I think our school only re-heats and doesn't have an actual kitchen where the lunches are made on site. That totally works for some people but I have been making lunches for the maniacs since they were born, so I wanted to keep going in that same healthy vein. And before you think we are total food snobs - we are junk food lovin' as much as anybody but we have learned that we just can't have it in the house because none of us have good willpower when it comes to food! (Okay, so really it's mostly me who has no willpower among yummy-but-not-so-good-for-you food!) And as Ross and I are trying to eat healthier these days, we are trying to teach the maniacs how important it is to eat healthy and that everything "in moderation" is a really sound idea.

Blah, blah, blah....enough preaching and let's get to some yummy lunch ideas! This is the first time in my life I have ever had to "save up" to buy lunch boxes. But we looked into these cool bento box style lunch boxes from laptop lunches and decided to get them for the big maniacs in hope that they would take an active part in their lunch making and healthy eating. Boy, we got more than we bargained for.....they have turned into total lunch geeks!

We're very happy that they are into this healthy lunch making idea. But frankly, they are now driving me nuts. They are quite demanding about what to make for their lunch and they want to have an active part, which means knife wielding first graders at 7:00 in the morning and a Mama who is not at her best without that first cup of coffee! NOT A GOOD COMBINATION! And all evening long they talk to me about their lunch for the next day and all of their "cool" ideas. Then in the morning they are fighting over who's snack idea they are going to make for that day. It's getting out of control.

Then, Hot Rod was so excited about his lunch that he decided to eat all of it - ALL OF IT - during his first snack last week. The teacher has to e-mail me to tell me to pack him more food because he ate it all before lunch and then begged his sister to share hers with him. Who else gets an e-mail like this when their kid already packed 5 pounds of food to take to school that day? Really, do we keep going with this? They are eating very well, but at the cost of my precarious sanity? But, what else is new. Oh yeah, some yummy pics. Here they are:

Anyway, I guess we'll keep going with this. And posting our lunch ideas here in case anybody can get some ideas. We look all over for ideas and have found some great ones here and here and here and here. Some people get really intricate with their "lunch designs". Uh, that won't be us. I'm just trying to have our family stay reasonably healthy, use less packaging and be more organized. Hahahahah...I know, I know, stop laughing, we're trying!

  2. I know, I am such a maniac. Cool lunches maybe, but the house looks like a tornado hit it!

  3. Okay, my kids (your nephews) missed the exceptional lunch seminar. They are totally PBJ or Fluff kids and Bologna and cheese. They are fruit eaters but I am impressed with the maniacs lunches.
